HEIC + EXIF
Useful before sending evidence photos, source images, or anything that should not advertise where it was taken.
Search “HEIC to JPG” or “PDF to Word.” Click the first result. Upload the file. Wait. Hunt for the real download button among ads.
For a client exhibit, a session recording, or a source image with GPS still in EXIF, it is an unnecessary risk.
No upload is not the same as “deleted after an hour.” A deletion claim is a policy. Local conversion is an architecture you can test.
After install, CamoConvert runs on-device, including air-gapped. Packet capture can confirm it. You cannot independently confirm that a vendor’s copy is gone.

This table compares the widely used online products, not every desktop SKU a vendor also sells. Columns that are not a documented product default are marked Unknown. We do not invent market-share, speed, or accuracy stats.
| Tool | Processing location | Offline after install | Formats / job | Metadata default | GUI / CLI | Pricing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smallpdf | Vendor servers (file upload) | No for the online product | PDF toolkit: convert, compress, merge, OCR, e-sign, and related PDF jobs | Unknown as a documented default across conversions | Web app | Freemium + subscription |
| iLovePDF | Vendor servers for the online product | No for the website. A separate desktop app is offered; local behavior is not independently documented here | PDF toolkit similar in scope to Smallpdf | Unknown as a documented default across conversions | Web app (+ optional desktop SKU) | Freemium + subscription |
| Adobe Acrobat Online | Adobe Document Cloud (upload) | No. Acrobat desktop is a different product | PDF convert, edit, compress, fill, and e-sign in the browser | Unknown for online tools | Web app | Free online tools; broader use via Acrobat subscription |
| CloudConvert | Vendor servers (EU/US, per vendor) | No | Broad: images, video, audio, documents | Not advertised as default strip | Web app + API | Free credit tier + packages / subscription |
| Zamzar | Vendor servers (file upload) | No | Broad format catalog (web + API) | Unknown as a documented default | Web app + API | Freemium + paid plans |
| Browser / WASM tools | Typically in-tab (e.g. Squoosh, ffmpeg.wasm). Some “online” pages still upload | Partial: scripts/WASM are usually fetched from the network; not a packaged air-gapped install | Varies; often one family (images or PDF), not a full desktop converter | Varies / unknown | Browser | Often free |
| CamoConvert | Local disk, bundled engines | Yes, after install — including air-gapped | Images (incl. HEIC), video, audio, documents → MD/HTML/TXT | Yes: EXIF / embedded metadata stripped by default on media output | Desktop GUI + bundled CLI | $19 one-time (Windows or macOS) |
Vendor policies, pricing, and desktop SKUs change. Confirm current terms before sending sensitive files. “Unknown” means we could not verify a documented product-wide default — not that the tool never strips metadata.
Same GUI flow for each: load a file or folder, pick an output format, convert on-device, save where you choose. Walkthrough: User Guide. Demo below; the cards use on-page diagrams rather than app screenshots.

Prep step for CamoText anonymization — convert first, then mask PII, still without uploading the source file.

Built as a maximally private but simple software suite for professionals like law firms and therapists.
No. A retention window describes how long a vendor says it keeps a copy after the upload. Private, in the sense that matters for confidential work, means the file never left your machine. You can verify local processing with packet capture. You cannot independently verify that a remote copy was deleted.
Sometimes for a single conversion, often not as a product you can air-gap. Many WASM tools process in the tab without uploading the file, which is better than a cloud converter, but they typically still load scripts and WASM from the network, depend on the browser, and are not a packaged install you can take fully offline. CamoConvert ships its engines in the app and runs after install with no network.
Not for PDF editing. Those products are PDF toolkits: merge, split, compress, OCR, fill, and e-sign. CamoConvert converts files and strips metadata. It turns PDFs and Office documents into Markdown, HTML, or plain text; converts images including HEIC; and extracts audio from video. If you need a full PDF editor, keep one. If you need local conversion without an upload, use CamoConvert.
Yes for image, video, and audio outputs. Images are written as fresh saves with EXIF removed. Video and audio drop embedded metadata and chapters. Document exports are extracted text (Markdown, HTML, or TXT), so PDF/Office metadata does not travel with the output. Same-format re-encode is available when you want to scrub without changing type. See the metadata section of the User Guide.
Yes. After installation the app does not initiate or accept network connections. It is designed for air-gapped use and can be checked with any packet-capture tool. Details: CamoConvert.
